Greece is best taken out of sequence. Skip the high-summer scramble and arrive in late May or September, when the caldera light softens, the ferries empty and the tavernas return to the people who run them. We keep houses in Athens and on the mainland — beneath the Acropolis and across the Peloponnese — among the whitewashed villages of the Cyclades, and on Crete and the Ionian islands, where pastel harbours give onto pine-backed bays and the water turns glass at dawn. Each comes with a resident team who know which caïque to charter, which cellar pours Assyrtiko worth the detour, and which beach is empty on a Tuesday. For 2026 we are also looking to the quieter Dodecanese — the same sea, fewer footprints.

Where to go in Greece

The city and the mainland beyond it — neoclassical rooftops beneath the Acropolis, Delphi at first light, and the stone estates of the Peloponnese. Arrive to a house with a view of the hill, and let the driver handle the rest.

Whitewashed villages above deep blue water — Paros, Naxos and the caldera light of Santorini. Come in late May or September, walk the stone paths before the sun climbs, and dine where the fishermen eat.

Olive groves and a Venetian harbour in Crete; the Ionian at its most unhurried — pastel harbours, bougainvillaea over tiled roofs and pine-backed bays. Long lunches in Assos and Fiskardo, water the colour of glass.
