Thailand rewards the traveller who slows down. Bangkok begins before dawn on the water, where klong markets trade mangosteen, orchids and rice from boat to boat, and the city's best tables are still found down a lane rather than up a tower. South, the Andaman coast rises in limestone towers above water the colour of green glass; longtails leave early, before the day boats, and the sand at Railay belongs to whoever wakes first. North, Chiang Mai keeps a cooler, quieter register — teak houses, temple gardens laid out along the ridge, and mist that lifts off the Ping valley by nine. We keep a small number of houses here: river villas within reach of Bangkok's markets, cliff-side retreats above the Andaman, and teak-and-stone houses in the hills outside Chiang Mai. Each comes with a resident team, a driver and a cook, and with people who know which boatman, which kitchen and which morning.
Where to go in Thailand
