Indonesia rewards the traveller who slows down. In Ubud the day starts before the heat does — temple stone dark with moss, offerings still fresh on the steps, the valley breathing under a low mist. An hour south, Canggu and the coast trade ceremony for salt: long pools cut into the palms, surf at first light, dinner that runs late and barefoot. Then the crossing to Nusa Penida, where cliffs fall into water so clear it looks lit from beneath. Our houses here are open-sided and quiet — teak, thatch, deep verandas, staff who anticipate rather than intrude. Come in the dry months of May to September, or take the shoulder weeks either side when the island is greener and largely yours.

Where to go in Indonesia

Temples, river gorges and rice terraces. Mornings walking the Campuhan ridge, afternoons with a Balinese healer or a market cook, evenings to gamelan carried up the valley.

Long lap pools under thatch, surf breaks a few minutes away, and the best kitchens on the island. The easy, sociable side of Bali — with the cliffs of Uluwatu within reach.

A fast boat from Sanur and the noise falls away. Limestone stacks, empty white coves, manta rays off the point — a day trip that many guests wish they had given a week.
