Portugal is a country of small distances and long days. A week here can begin with a tram climbing through Lisbon's Baixa, pass an afternoon in a Porto cellar above the Douro, and end with cold Atlantic water below the ochre cliffs of the Algarve. Our houses sit slightly apart from the crowds — a townhouse with its original azulejos, a granite quinta among vines, a low white house behind the dunes — and the days are built around the table: bread and cheese from the market, fish grilled outside, wine that never travelled far. Bring an appetite and no fixed plan.

Where to go in Portugal

Seven hills, tiled facades and a tram that still rattles through the old streets. Mornings in Alfama and Chiado, afternoons at the Gulbenkian, dinner in a tasca that takes no bookings — then a nightcap where the city drops away to the Tagus.

Ribeira's painted houses stacked above the Douro, granite churches and the cellars of Gaia across the water. A slower, more northern Portugal: francesinha at noon, vintage port at dusk, and the vineyards an hour upriver.

Ochre cliffs, hidden coves and a sea that stays honest and cold. Boats to caves at first light, sardines on the sand at lunch, and the quiet interior of cork oak and whitewashed villages twenty minutes inland.
