Location

Melides, Alentejo, Portugal

On Portugal’s Alentejo coast, just south of Comporta, Melides is one of the last places in Europe where the coast still feels truly authentic. Comporta has become one of the most sought-after escapes for the stylish and well-travelled, but Melides has kept the quiet, untouched spirit that first drew people here. Rolling hills of cork oak and pine run down to a peaceful lagoon, the village keeps its slow country rhythm, and long golden beaches stretch for miles with hardly anyone else in sight. The coastline is the region’s greatest treasure. At Praia da Vigia, Galé-Fontainhas and Aberta Nova, wide sandy beaches are framed by dunes and ochre cliffs, and the Atlantic rolls in clean and wild. The Melides lagoon, where fresh water meets the sea, offers calm water for swimming and paddling, while horseback rides along the shore at sunset are one of the coast’s most memorable experiences. A little further north, the Sado estuary is home to a resident family of wild dolphins, and the village of Carrasqueira still uses its centuries-old stilt fishing piers, reaching out over the water like wooden lace. Inland, the Serra de Grândola is covered in the cork oak forests the Alentejo is famous for. Their bark is still harvested by hand every nine years without harming the trees, a tradition that has made Portugal the world’s leading cork producer. Whitewashed villages with blue-trimmed doors, weekly markets and traditional cante alentejano singing, recognised by UNESCO, keep the region’s culture alive. Nearby, Santiago do Cacém has a medieval castle and the Roman ruins of Miróbriga. At the table, the Alentejo is known for its wines, olive oil, fresh bread, black pork, local cheeses and fish from the coast, and when you want a taste of Comporta’s barefoot elegance, its beach restaurants, rice fields and boutiques are a short drive away. Here, wellness comes from silence, space and nature. The fresh air of the hills, the scent of cork oak and pine, and the sound of the ocean invite you to slow down and breathe deeply. Days can begin with yoga facing the hills and continue with forest walks, beach rides or a swim in the lagoon. By night, far from city lights, the sky fills with stars. From Cork Oak Villa, high in the hills above Melides, guests can enjoy it all while staying in true privacy, with Comporta close by and the world far away.
