Dalmatia is a coast best taken at the pace of a ferry timetable. Split wakes early — the Riva under its palms, the fish market done by nine, the mountain standing grey-green behind the town. Inside the walls of Diocletian's palace the lanes stay cool all day: green shutters, geraniums on the steps, a table set out at the foot of a staircase where the light drops through. By late morning the boats leave for the islands — Brač and the long golden spit at Zlatni Rat that shifts with the current, then Hvar, Vis and the quieter bays beyond. Our houses here are stone and lime-washed, with terraces made for lunch that runs into the evening, and teams who know which skipper to call and which konoba still cooks under the bell.
