Spain rewards the traveller who slows down. In the Balearics, dry-stone fincas sit above coves so clear the boats appear to float on air; on the Costa Brava, whitewashed fishing villages hold their ground between umbrella pines and the sea; in Barcelona, the day is measured in vermut, tiled tabletops and plates that keep arriving. We take houses in all three, and build the week around them — a skipper for the coves at first light, a table booked where the locals eat, a chef who cooks what the market gave him that morning.

Where to go in Spain

Pine-backed calas reached best by boat, dry-stone fincas in the hills, and a rhythm of swim, lunch, siesta, swim. We arrange the skipper, the mooring and the beach club table before you land.

Calella de Palafrugell and the villages either side of it — whitewashed arcades, cypress and pine, small sand beaches below the coastal path. Empordà wine country and its restaurants are twenty minutes inland.

A city best eaten: padrón peppers, gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas and a cold vermut on a tiled table. Two days here before the coast, with the galleries and the market visits handled quietly.
