Location

Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy

In the quiet south of Tuscany, where the famous Montalcino hills meet the wild green slopes of Monte Amiata, Cypress Springs Villa rests in one of Italy’s most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes. Here, the rolling golden fields of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are lined with the slender cypress trees that have become a symbol of Tuscany, while medieval hill towns rise from the countryside as they have for centuries. Siena is less than an hour away, and both Florence and Rome are about two hours by car, yet it feels like a world apart. This is a land of healing waters. Monte Amiata is an ancient volcano, and its warmth still rises through the earth in natural hot springs that the Etruscans and Romans used to restore body and mind. At Saturnia, warm turquoise water cascades over white stone pools beneath the open sky. In the tiny village of Bagno Vignoni, a thermal pool fills the main square instead of a piazza, and at Bagni San Filippo, mineral-rich water flows through the forest over dazzling white rock formations. Few places in Europe offer such a natural connection to wellness. The surrounding towns are among the most enchanting in Italy. Montalcino, crowned by its medieval fortress, is home to Brunello, one of the world’s most celebrated wines. Pienza, designed as an ideal Renaissance town, is famous for its pecorino cheese and sweeping views over the valley, while the Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo sits peacefully among olive groves and vineyards. On the slopes of Amiata, the villages of Santa Fiora and Arcidosso keep their stone lanes, castles and crystal-clear springs, where the Fiora river rises from the mountain. The seasons shape life here. Chestnut and beech forests cover the mountain, offering cool walks in summer and golden colour in autumn, when chestnuts, porcini mushrooms and truffles fill local kitchens. Family-run osterias serve handmade pasta, local olive oil, aged cheeses and slow-cooked dishes, paired with wines from Montalcino and the Maremma. Southern Tuscany invites you to slow down. The fresh hill air, the warmth of thermal waters, forest walks and long meals with wine from nearby vineyards bring body and mind back into balance. Mornings can begin with yoga facing the hills, followed by a day at the springs, a walk through ancient villages, or simply time in the countryside, with nothing to do but enjoy the view.
